Tall Sunflower Oil Painting

Sold
Tall Sunflower is the oil painting I finished today.  It is painted on a 14x11 gallery wrapped canvas with edges also painted for hanging without a frame, although I think paintings look much better framed.   I wanted the sunflower to stand alone much taller than the rest backlit with a beautiful blue sky.

I used two photos from www.wetcanvas.com reference library of images for artists to make up the composition using the best features of both.  I like to paint flowers especially a single flower in portrait mode so we can focus on the great beauty and anatomy each and every flower has.  When several are bunched in nature, or an arrangement, the view becomes multiple and sometimes the focal point becomes one flower anyway with the rest in varying degrees of importance to the composition.  I placed the flower to the left side of the canvas and located the leaves to maintain the overall balance of the painting.   I hope you like the painting.

A Summer Sunflower, Origianl Oil Painting

I finished this little painting today.  It is in oils on a 14x11 inch gallery wrap canvas.  I like painting single flowers on dark backgrounds as the contrast is strong and the flower stands out vividly.  Also, putting in strong highlights and shadows on the flower and leaves makes up for not putting in a colorful realistic background.

I used the following colors in my pallet:  black, white, yellow, yellow pale, red, orange, sap green, terra verde green, van dyke brown and prussian blue.   I have three large tool boxes to put all my paint and brushes in.  One is for oils, one for acrylics, and the last one is for the glass paints I no longer use.  I stopped painting on glass several years ago, but I keep them anyway.  I sold a lot of window paintings back in the day, but got tired of painting on glass and cleaning up old windows.  I prefer painting on canvas or board.

Indian Red Blanket Wildflower Oil Painting

Indian Red Blanket Wildflower is the first painting I have finished since coming back from our trip to the Texas hill country.  Very fitting.  The painting is in oils on a 14x11 inch gallery wrap canvas with edges painted.  Does not include a frame.

The hill country was in full bloom with Blackeyed Susans mixed with the Indian Red Blankets.  The trip was a mix of work and vacation.  We did the Market Day at Hallettsville KC Hall on the third Saturday in May and then traveled on Sunday to Bandera, Texas and took the week off prior to the Bandera Funtier Days on the weekend.  We spent most of the time driving around the countryside taking pictures of wildlife and nature.  I renewed my energy for painting and couldn't wait until we got home to paint.

We stayed in our Wilderness Travel Trailer and had a great time.  I highly recommend the Old Spanish Trail Restaurant in Bandera and the Skyline RV Park.  We also visited the Art Galleries in Boerne and ate at the Bear Moon.  I gained a few pounds on this trip.

I hope you like the painting and will click the facebook icon to tell your friends about my blog. Your comments are welcome.

Texas Countryside, Oil Painting 16 x20

Texas Countryside is another freestyle oil painting of things I love about Texas.  Also, an inspiration from the similar smaller painting I posted earlier this month motivated me to paint the scene bigger.  The larger canvas enticed me to put more in the scene and a bit of what is going on in Texas now (oil wells in background).

I like painting on 16 x 20 inch canvases.  They are a nice presentation size and will fit in easily on your walls.  Carolyn, my wife, frames my paintings including the selection and mounting of the canvas.  I took the picture of this one in the studio hanging on the particle board wall which I planned to paint, but once the easel got set up, I never got around to it.  I would rather paint on canvas than walls.

I hope you like the painting.  If interested in purchasing this painting or my other artworks, please email me for availability and price.  I accept payment over the internet through PayPal, a secure method.

Duckie and the Grackle Gallery, Lake Jackson, Texas

Don't miss the opportunity to see the "Duckie and the Grackle Gallery" located in Lake Jackson, Texas.  It is owned and operated by my artist friends: Cherie and Glenn McBride - Duckie and Grackle.

I visited their new art gallery today and was quickly taken in by the grand art works of nature and wildlife.  Duckie's style of painting is beautiful and striking.  Definitely not what you would expect to see.  Her subjects live in a vivid rush of color brought to life on canvas.  Cheri paints in the Gallery where the progress can be viewed.  Glenn is the Marketing Manager and, a composer, designer, and poet.   If you can't make it to their gallery, I encourage you to visit their web site:

Texas High Sky, Acrylic Painting

Texas High Sky was the second painting I worked on at the Burr Trade Days (See the prior post) and finished it in the studio.  It is also a 14x11 inch acrylic painting on a canvas hardboard.  This is no place in particular in Texas, just a place I imagined I like to go to.  Hope you like it.

Poppies in Blue Vase, Demo/Study

The Poppies in BlueVase painting is a freestyle painting I did for demonstration outdoors at the Burr, Texas Trade Days last weekend.  I paint at shows when possible to pass the time and customers like to see art in progress.

This painting was done without a reference and freely out of my imagination.  I don't mind people looking over my shoulder at the easel, as I can talk and paint at the same time.  After days of painting by myself in the studio, being able to talk with others about art is a real treat.  Especially with people wanting to learn to paint.  Who knows, maybe watching an old guy throw paint on a canvas might inspire them to give it a try.

The palette was:  Yellow ochre, Yellow Medium, Alizeran Crimson, Cad. Red, Prussan Blue, Black, White, Sap Green, Yellow Light, Unbleached White, some tidbit of Purple.

Acrylic paint on 14x11 inch canvas hardboard.

Thanks for looking.

Two Flamingos, Oil Painting 20x24

I finished "Two Flamingos" last week.  It is painted realistically on a 20x24 inch canvas.  It took about three months working on it along with other paintings in progress. I used a photo submitted by Lady Carol in the wetcanvas.com image library for artists as my reference.  Many thanks to her and wetcanvas.

I hope you like the painting.  Contact me if you are interested in purchasing it.
