My first feline painting! Kitty Cat

My first feline painting!  I had planned to start a series of cat paintings, but was always working on other subjects. Now that the cat is finished, I want to paint more of them, maybe a panther or tiger?

I  painted 'Kitty Cat' in acrylics on a hand stretched 12x12 inch gallery wrap canvas. The piece was a commission with the only request by the customer, was to have  'slate blue' in the back ground.  It worked out well with the black and whites of the cat.  I embellished the background with some pink to  match the ears and nose. The black markings on the head were easy, but the shades of whites to give the body and fur shape, took some work.  Hope you like it.

Merry Christmas,

Last Arts/Crafts Show for 2013

Carolyn and I had a great time yesterday in Yorktown, Texas at the "Santa's Cafe' Arts/Crafts Show".  The show was a hit: prosperous, good people and lots of great food.  We soon discovered that everybody knew everybody else and witnessed several spontaneous reunions of friends happy to see and greet each other.

The picture of us, at right, was taken by one of our new friends we met at the show.
Merry Christmas!

White Egret Acrylic Painting

I finished reworking a painting today that I did in 2009.  I didn't like the background on the first painting and decided to do more to it.  I also did some work on the egret.  We see white objects as white, but really they are full of reflected light, shadows, and colors. I tried to pick up the values of these missed opportunities in the first painting.  Thanks for visiting.

Texas Heartland, Original Painting

I finished Texas Heartland today with the addition of the lettering to the barn.  I made several additions and changes to the painting since my last posting to bring the sky and landscape in harmony.  I planted more blue bonnets and trees, and also made the sky brighter.  This painting was done as a commission.

Comments are welcomed.

Texas Heartland, a painting in progress

I am real excited about the painting I started yesterday.  I call it Texas Heartland and will be evident when the painting is finished.  The work is in acrylics on a 11x14 inch stretched canvas.  I was given the goals for the painting and I get to design and paint what I love to paint most-- Texas barns and blue bonnet fields.

In the above, the first picture shows how the work starts, and continues into the second picture in developing the basic layout.  Notice the changes from the first to second picture.  Painters designing on the canvas continuously make changes throughout the work until it is refined and finished.  I rerouted the road a couple of times to find the best approach to the barn.  I call this stage of the painting the "block in", where basic layout and components are done and the entire painting has color on it. Also referred to as the under painting. The edges are painted with a dark brown to push the scene forward.  Now that a foundation is established, the filling and refinement starts.  Check back for the next stages to be posted.  Blue bonnets are coming.

Fishing on the Flats, 12 x 16, Oil on Gallery Canvas w/edges painted
$400 plus S/H/appl. taxes

Fishing On The Flats is a painting capturing one of the beautiful sunsets God gives us everyday.  The joy of getting to fish in one of these remote spots is shared by many fisherman on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.   I love to fish, but I think I enjoyed painting this scene more than going fishing this week.  Many Thanks to my friend Rockey for letting me use his photo for reference.  I can paint a favorite fishing memory for you.  Email me for information.

Hope your like the painting.  Now let's go fishing!

Pink Dogwoods, Original Oil Painting

I finished another small oil painting of dogwoods this week on a 8 x 10 inch gallery wrap canvas.  This one has an interesting background created from imagination and left over palette.   I like the brights and soft pink blends in these little guys.  Dogwood trees have a four petal flower and are among the earliest in the forest to blossom and create beautiful landscapes.  I like the way each flower has unique shapes and appear to be floating.  I used some impressionistic technique for the leaves and simple blends of aliz. crimson with white. The painting is $100 plus shipping.  I hope you enjoy the painting.

Finished Oil Paintings, This Week

Forget Me Nots (Left)
Dogwoods (Right)

Lilacs (Left)
Bluebonnets (Right)

I finished the first three over the weekend and the Bluebonnets last week.  The pictures are good, but there is no comparison to actual paintings on canvas.  Lighting and computer monitors result in a slight color shift.  All four are painted in oils on a gallery wrap 10 x 8 canvas in the portrait format.  The edges are also painted with the same dark green to harmonize the paintings as a group.

The paintings in this post are sold,  Please email me if you are interested in purchasing a painting or having commission work done.  Inquiries and comments are welcomed.  I hope you like the paintings.

God Bless You,

After finishing the pump this morning, I started on four new paintings this afternoon.  Hope you like the painting.

Pierce Church, Original Acrylic Painting

The Pierce Church painting was done in December 2008 and was intended for sale, but has been one of our favorites and so it is hanging in our home.  We now have more favorites than wall space and The Pierce Church is available for $350 plus s/h and tax if applicable.  The Pierce Church is historical as it was built by Shanghi Pierce for his cowboys on one of the largest ranches in Texas.  Some very interesting information about it is available on the internet.  Hope you like the painting.

The Redbirds, Original Painting

The Redbirds are painted in acrylics on a 16x20 inch gallery wrapped canvas.  I have wanted to paint a pair of Redbirds in a realistic setting for a long time and was so lucky to get a picture of the newly weds in our bougainvillea. They also nested in a bush next to our porch and hatched three chicks.  My wife and I love watching the wildlife that live in our area.  Several of my paintings are of birds and flowers living in our yard.

I hope you like the painting.

My Mandolin, Original Acrylic Painting

My Mandolin is the second of a series of three string instruments I am painting.  (See the previous post about the Viola)  All three will be painted with fine acrylics on 24 x 12 inch gallery wrap canvas with edges painted.

For artists that may be interested in shop talk:

The little mandolin turned out to be an interesting challenge as it has many components to deal with each having unique surfaces or shapes.  I hung a blue snuggy for the background material during the still life setting which added some nice folds and wrinkles and make the painting more interesting.  The palette requirements were a tidbit of this and that, but the mainly was : white, black, raw umber, raw sienna, burnt sienna, burnt umber, red, cerulean blue, phthalo blue, naples yellow, and acro gold.  To get the light amber for body I used washes several times using more or less glaze for the lighter and darker areas.

Today, I did the still setting of my grandson's guitar and will start painting it tomorrow.  I like to paint things that are meaningful to me.  This painting reminds me of my younger days when I played the guitar and mandolin.

I hope you have enjoyed the post and will refer me to your family and friends.

Best Friends, A Man and His Dog

Art Prints

I painted this scene a few years ago of a rancher and his dog making the rounds checking on the property located in west Texas. The bluebonnets had just started blooming at the time. The lab has saved master from getting bitten by rattlesnake several times as they are numerous out there.  The original has sold, but prints are available for purchase on Fine Art America.

Butterfly on Jasmine, Original Acrylic Painting

I finished Butterfly on Jasamine today.  The painting is painted in acrylics and is on a 20x20 gallery wrapped canvas with edges also painted.  Ready hang on your wall.

Springtime weather is coming to South Texas and along with it is increased wildlife activity.  Our jasmine is in full bloom and the bees and butterflies are all over it.  That is until you try to capture a picture of the little beauties.  I chased this colorful butterfly around for a long time (was a windy day) and was able to get several nice photos of it to paint from.  I liked this one and hope you enjoy it also.

Butterfly on Jasmine is for sale.  Email me if you wish to purchase.

Blue Bonnet Field, Original Painting

Sold
I finished the Blue Bonnet Field today. The acrylic painting is on 11 x14 inch gallery wrapped canvas with edges painted.  I chose to use a country side scene with a single tree in the field of blue bonnets and wild flowers.  I used only the brush, paint, and imagination to compose and paint the scene at the easel. The back drop of hills and birds compliment the view by increasing the depth/distance.  A simple palette was used in this alla prima acrylic: white, raw umber, raw sienna, yellow ochre, permanent green, yellow light, cad red light, cerelan blue, light blue, cad blue, touch of pink, white, and a tid bit of purple.

I will be showing the painting at the Hallettsville Market Days this Saturaday.

Mexican Lime Oil Painting

We have two Mexican Lime trees that abundantly provide my wife Carolyn with limes for her tea.  Ours produce nearly all year long.  They have small white blossoms and the bees love them.  The fruit turns to a pale yellow when fully ripe.

I painted the Mexican Lime in oils alla prima on a 10 x 8 gallery wrapped canvas.  I had prepared the canvas a couple of months ago with a blue teal left over mix from another painting and have been thinking about what to paint on it.  Kept it simple and used the lime as it was complimentary.  The palette consisted of: yellow light, sap green, green light permanent, yellow ochre, yellow, burnt umber, white and a tad of burnt sienna.  Check my website and etsy in the above menu should you wish to purchase paintings or prints.  I am also a member of Fine Art America which is a great place to buy art.

I hope you like the painting.

Cotton Candy Rose Oil Painting

I finished the Cotton Candy Rose today.  I enjoyed toying around with the different shades of pink and reds.  Subtle shadows make the body of a light colored rose pop and I hope I got there in this one.  The background is a very dark green.  I used a photo of the rose to follow as a guide, but I didn't like the leaves in the photo; so I took license to grow some.  My palette in this 16x16 oil was mainly:  white, aliz crimson, red, blue, green lt, sap green, cad yellow lt, red lt, orang, paynes gray, and some I probably forgot.  LOL

The new year has started off well for us.  I hope the same for you.  You are invited to follow my blog and email me if you have any questions.

Happy New Year,
jimmie@jimmiesart.com
