Springtime Iris Oil Painting

Springtime Iris Oil Painting

18 by 14 inch stretched canvas with gallery wrapped painted edges.  ready to hang out of the box.

I have had three irises and a landscape painting in progress at the same time.  The irises were a challenge and the work is as close to realistic as I had time for.  The paintings are going to art shows this spring, but should you be interested, send me an email.

Many thanks for stopping in.

God Bless You,

Yellow Iris Oil Painting

Yellow Iris Oil Painting, 20 by 20 inches Gallery Wrap

I finished the painting as realistic as I had time to allow and still have a few adjustments in color I will make to the greenery.  The edges are also painted and it comes ready to hang.

Irises have many folds and wrinkles and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.  Thanks for visiting.

Purple Iris Oil Painting, a work in progress

I am working on several paintings this month and have reached the final stages on two of my iris's.  The purple iris is in the evaluation period before it can be called 'finished'.  I already see a couple of items to rework: the beard on the right and darken the shades in the background on the upper half to have more contrast between the white petals and the soft yellows.

I could have simplified the petals  but I couldn't resist the challenge of the twists and folds real iris's have.  The idea is to use a photo reference and paint it the way it looks best to you and omit the irrelevant components.  And use the colors more fitting to your tastes.

I am also considering putting in a few green blades in the background.  For now, we will let this one dry some more and work on the other paintings.  Thanks for visiting my blog.  I would enjoy your comments.

God Bless You,

White Pelicans, an Original Oil Painting by Jimmie Bartlett

White Pelicans is an oil painting on a 36 by 30 inch gallery wrap canvas with edges painted black.

I have been working on these guys for several months, as time permitted, because of our full show schedule.  The setting for the painting is on Matagorda Beach where hundreds of white pelicans and a large variety of sea birds were enjoying a sunny winter day. In this painting, there were so many small birds following the pelicans around it looked confusing, so I chose three pelicans and included enough sea birds to make it more interesting.

The bright whites of the birds and pelicans created some over exposures on my reference phots, but I was able to compensate with off white mixes using a variety of colors and earth tones.  Gulls are much easier to paint as they really deal more with the gray scale ie light to dark blacks.  I prefer to use paynes grey instead of black.

The original is for sale.  Giclee fine art prints on canvas and archival paper are available.  Contact me for information on limited edition prints of White Pelicans.

I hope you enjoy the painting and have a blessed day.

Peaceful Beach an Oil Painting by Jimmie Bartlett

Peaceful Beach oil painting is painted on a 16 by 20 inch gallery wrap canvas.  I enjoyed the freedom of colors and composition in this work.  The only requirement was to paint a beach scene with the beach as the focal point, a few birds allowed.  Sunsets were also excluded.  The main palette for the sky was cobalt blue, a bit of ultra marine, touch of purple, and white.  The sea built with cobalt blue, cerulean blue, and viridian green.  The sand was painted with earth tones, paynes gray,  and white.  I used some photos for guides, but got tangential and let it flow. Canvas and archival art paper prints are available.

Cody, An Original Oil Painting

I finished Cody this week after several settings of painting him in layers and tweaking the features to make him identifiable as the unique horse he was.  This commission is painted on a 20 by 16 inch canvas in oils.  I hope you like the background with a soft cosmic approach to push the image forward.  The colors were mixed to represent his summer coat and I tried to capture the likeness of his mane, blaze, and face realistically.

One eventful story about this horse:

The lady that owned and loved him entered a fund raiser barrel race.  She had never ridden in a barrel race, but Cody had earlier in his life.  She let him have his head and he ran the barrels without missing a lick!  All she could do was to hang on.  A horse with a strong heart.

I hope you enjoy the painting and the story of a very memorable horse.

May God Bless You,

Blue Tipped Rose Oil Painting

The Blue Tipped Rose Oil Painting is on a 16 by 20 inch gallery wrap canvas.  I selected this rose to paint because of it's unique combination of colors.  The work was a nice challenge in mixing and blending to get the results for a realistic approach.  I changed several of the petal shapes hopefully to give the rose center a more traditional look and make it easier for me to paint.  The black background really makes the rose vivid.  The pallet is very simple using a bit aliz. crimson, permanent rose, purple, prussan blue, lamp black, and tit. white.  By the way, back grounds take longer to dry.

I want thank and give to credit Mr. Andreas Hensel for the use of the reference photo he contributed to the public domain web site Pixabay.

Hope you like the work and come back to visit.

Blue Iris Painting

Sell Art Online
One of my early paintings of irises that surprised me with how well the simple composition came out. I painted it freestyle without references or sketch. Very relaxing to paint with freedom. The gold background compliments the blue iris.

Birdhouse Art

Building and Painting Birdhouses is another avenue of art that I enjoy.  The compositions are endless as there are many types of birdhouses and themes to paint.  I paint these in a "free style" mode, just get an idea and start painting.  Cutting out the wood pieces and assembly of the houses is fun.  These are built to withstand the rigors of outdoor use and have removable bases to clean the old nests out.  Most of my customers use them for indoor or porch decor.  The birdhouses are for sale on etsy.com.

I hope you are enjoying the Spring weather and will come back to see my blog.

Bluebonnets have arrived in Texas

Bluebonnets are in fresh bloom in Texas.  We have seen several small patches springing up, along with the Indian Paintbrush and other wild flowers.  Springtime is such a good change after the long wet and cold winter all of the USA has had this year.  I took the picture (right) of one in our front yard that started blooming three days ago.

I usually paint a bluebonnet composition every year in anticipation of their arrival.  See my blog post about Bluebonnet Fields in Texas .  I hope you enjoy the bluebonnets or whatever the springtime bloom brings to your area where you live.   We will be taking road trips in early April when the bluebonnets blanket the Texas countryside.

God Bless You,
